Kootenai Health to host a mini-triathlon geared just for kids Sept. 5
A new mini-triathlon - just for kids - is coming to Coeur d'Alene on Saturday, Sept. 5. All children are welcome to join the fun.
The 1st Annual Kootenai Health Triathlon for Kids will give boys and girls ages 4 - 12 chances to be champions on kid-sized courses, specific to their age groups, in and around the McGrane Center on the Kootenai Health campus.
Check in will begin at 8 a.m., followed by a mandatory 9:30 a.m. pre-race meeting. The first race, featuring the youngest entrants, will start at 10 a.m.
Kids can use training wheels, floatation devices and receive assistance from their parents. Four to 5-year-olds will swim one lap in the indoor therapy pool, then bicycle and run one lap each on a paved course outside the building.
At the other end of the spectrum, 12-year-olds will swim two laps, bike six laps and run three laps. The course lengths will vary according to participants' ages. Races will start with the youngest and end with the oldest kids. Each age group will have the course to itself.
Keeping eyes on it all will be volunteers from Kootenai Rehabilitation Services, who are organizing and hosting the race, which they hope will become an annual event.
Jeremy Evans, vice president of professional services at Kootenai Health, said there will be plenty of adult supervision.
Proceeds will benefit children's services at Kootenai Health. Pre-registration for the event is $17, entries after Aug. 25 will be $20. All participants receive T-shirts and all finishers receive awards. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will each win an additional award. Children must wear bike helmets and be accompanied by an adult.
